Xu Beihong In Nanyang |
| by Na | ||||||||||||||
Xu Beihong (1895-1953) is regarded as one of the most seminal figures in the history of modern Chinese painting. Apart from his larger than life persona and dramatic life story spanning continents and wars, he was one of the first to articulate the need for artistic expressions that reflected a new modern China at the beginning of the 20th century. As one of the earliest Chinese artists to be trained in Europe, he was instrumental in promoting the use of scientific realism and the direct study of nature to rejuvenate ink painting. Co-organised by the Singapore Art Museum and the Xu Beihong Art Museum (Beijing), Xu Beihong in Nanyang will showcase artworks created in the 1930s and early 1940s, during the artists sojourn in Southeast Asia and India . The exhibition will explore Xu’s journey in Southeast Asia and India, and the interactions that went on between artist and the local communities; how each left an indelible mark on the other, and how these helped propelled Xu Beihongs artistic achievement to greater heights ISBN : 9789810801809 Our Price : SGD $90.00 |

Impression Of The World With My Brush |
| by Lee Khoon Choy | ||||||||||||||
I loved painting from a young age. I first learnt painting in Chung Ling High school, Penang (my hometown) from our art teacher Lee Chin Yong. He taught us the Chinese style as well as the Western style of painting. Under his guidance, I learnt the basic steps to painting as well as the painting history of China and Europe.After the war, I became a journalist for 13 years and had not much time for my painting. From journalism, I quickly entered into the realm of politics and remained a politician for nearly 30 years. I became more interested in art and music only after I became Minister of State for Culture in 1965. The exposure I acquired from my time as a journalist and my subsequent ministerial postings as Ambassador to eight different countries was immense. I had the opportunity to travel and observe the world’s most famous national monuments. I never had an opportunity to be trained in any art academy and only took up painting seriously in 1967, a year before my first posting as Ambassador to Egypt. This was when I met an old Chinese painter, Shen Loo, who taught me the style of “painting without tears”. This style originated from a painter in the Ming dynasty by accident. This painter had been trying very hard to become famous, but was met with repeated disappointments. One night, he was drunk and fell asleep on the table he was painting. In the old days, the Chinese had long hair and the ends of his hair fell on the ink pot. When he woke up in the morning, the ink on his hair made and imprint on the rice paper, leaving a natural and beautiful painting. That incident inspired him to change his style of painting to a more natural technique of what he called “the ink splashing” and soon became famous because of this unique method. Malaysia: Fifty Years Of Diplomacy 1957-2007 |
| by Chandran Jeshurun | ||||||||||||||
Malaysia’s entry into international affairs as the independent Federation of Malaya in 1957 marked the emergence of a uniquely new factor in Southeast Asian regional politics. However, by dint of an amazingly intuitive and constructive leadership from the very beginning, it became an attention-grabbing and daring player in the world at large within the following two decades. This book captures Malaysias first 50 years in international diplomacy and is intended as a handy guide for the interested reader rather than a substantive reference source. Professor Chandran presents a systematic account of how the Foreign Ministry of Malaysia developed step-by-step and grew in confidence in its international dealings. Based on interviews with a wide range of retired diplomats and politicians, this study is aimed at both the specialist and general reader and offers a balanced contribution to an important story. Hakka Soul: Memories, Migrations, And Meals |
| by Chin Woon Ping | ||||||||||||||
Chin Woon Ping’s Hakka Soul chronicles the dreams, ambitions and idiosyncrasies of her family, beginning with the death of her grandmother in pre-Independence Malaya. It was a tumultuous period when the occupying Japanese army had just been defeated, the British colonial government was losing its grip on the country and a Communist guerilla insurgency had broken out in the jungles of the Malay Peninsula. Her stories follow the family’s move to the United States and a journey to China to visit her father’s ancestral home. The family’s migrations are part of the global diaspora of the Hakkas, known in China as the Guest People. Chin’s poetically and amusingly rendered accounts of Hakka history, language and mythology derived from research and oral history are a moving tribute to the endurance of her people and their culture, and a paean to the incomparable Hakka cuisine.
