The humanitarian crises caused by civil conflicts and wars in Africa are too great in scope for an adequate and effective continental response. The founding of the African Union and the drafting of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, the basis for collective action against genocide, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity makes this a critical time to reflect on how best to address regional conflicts. This book responds to new regional conflicts over health, water, land and food security in the world's poorest, most socially fragmented continent. The work assesses African regional security arrangements and provides new policy recommendations for the future.

Terrorism and political violence have invariably accompanied the progressive modernization of states; a socio-cultural reaction to the problems of social change and development. To understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to consider the nature of traditional society and how it differs from modernity. Starting with a basic history of modern terrorism, James Dingley uses a Durkheimian sociological framework to dissect the role of social relations, culture and religion in impelling men and women to defend their socio-cultural context with violence against the challenge of external forces. Placing emphasis on a historical and social understanding of violence and key issues such as nationalism, religion, science, the Enlightenment and Romanticism for understanding terrorism in all its forms, this book allows for a more critical examination of terrorism as a response to changes in the organization and cultural goals in a society. It is a decisive contribution to our understanding of the political and social relevance of terrorism as we know and experience it today.

More Details..

Under Attack makes a new contribution to the field of international relations in general and the study of international law and armed conflict in particular, in two core ways. First, it links information from varying disciplines, most notably international relations and international law, to form a comprehensive picture of state practice and the challenges it poses to the legal rules for the use of force. Secondly, it organises the information in such a way to identify two core groups of contemporary justifications used by states: humanitarian reasons and self-defence, both with their sub-categories. At the core of this book is the question of how state practice since 1990 has challenged the long-established legal regime on the international use of force. Are we merely witnessing a temporary and insignificant challenge to international law or are the rules genuinely under attack?

More Details..

Political realists are accustomed to argue that ethical considerations have no place in public affairs. This is always a debatable view: realism habitually employs a crude utilitarian morality rather than being totally amoral, and ethical considerations have continued to play an ever more prominent role in the thinking and actions of policy makers and politicians. In addition, citizens increasingly expect policies not only to be efficient and effective according to some purely economic or prudential calculation, but also to be equitable and just as well. As a consequence, both the public and private morality of politicians and public officials has come under ever greater scrutiny. The essays collected together in this volume explore the ethical issues raised by the process and substance of policy-making, and discuss whether it is reasonable to expect ethical standards in public affairs.

This book reconsiders how religion matters and argues that it is the key component in the cultural revolution that involves Muslims globally and the efforts of an increasing number to translate this religious/cultural assertion into a political reality. Islamism is not so much a challenge to democracy as the incorporation of Islam into what is essentially a secular political struggle against dominant political systems. Assesses why the various expressions of political Islam have remained with us for so long, and traces their evolution. Identifies the challenges posed by the different manifestations of contemporary Islamism, moderate and radical, not just in terms of security, but in the realm of politics, society and ideas. Concludes with an assessment of the ramifications of these developments on relations between the West and Muslim states and communities.

It includes transcripts of recently-released Watergate tapes that reveal Nixon's thoughts and reactions to events as they unfolded, and that deal with the identity of the anonymous source known as "Deep Throat". It uses the crisis to explain how American politics and law work and provides an indication of the way the country may handle future crises. It provides brief summaries of what happened to various Watergate participants. It covers the entire span of time from Nixon's 1968 acceptance speech at the RNC until his pardon in 1974.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Regular army is a name given to the permanent force of a country's army that is maintained under arms during peacetime. Under arms describes a state of military readiness used to describe regular combat-ready military forces. Military personnel can be generally categorized into two groups: regular forces, or the regular army, and auxiliary forces, or the reserve army. Regular forces are fully trained and fully armed, and are kept in a constant state of readiness for deployment. Auxiliary forces are given basic training and are only called up for service during emergencies or during large mobilizations. National Guard and military reserve forces would be classified as auxiliary forces because the majority of those personnel are usually employed full time in the civilian workforce.

More Details..

The ability of governments and the global community to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, ensure security, and promote adherence to basic standards of human rights depends on people's trust in their government. One of the challenges in promoting that trust is engaging citizens, especially marginalized groups and the poor. Where governance processes are exclusionary and basic services are not accessible, intrastate conflicts and violence within the country can negatively impact national and global security and peace. Weak systems and processes of governance tend to erode trust in government. Within this context, the issue of how to build trust in government and between socioeconomic actors has become an important issue in both developed and developing economies. This book seeks to answer questions raised about how to strengthen trust in government within the Asia-Pacific region. Through analyses of trends within NortheastAsia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific Islands, and specific innovations and reforms at the country level, the contributors offer various perspectives on the causes of the decline in trust, on countries and institutions that have managed to maintain higher degrees of confidence, and on governance innovations and practices that have played an important role in strengthening trust once it has faltered. Contributors include Peride K. Blind (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs), Ledivina V. Carino (former professor and dean, University of the Philippines), Gerard A. Finin (East-West Center's Pacific Islands Development Program), Sukehiro Hasegawa (Hosei University Tokyo and United Nations University), Byong Seob Kim (Presidential Committee on Government Innovation & Decentralization, Republic of Korea, and Seoul National University), Pan Suk Kim (Yonsei University, South Korea), Sajjad Naseer (Lahore School of Economics), Meredith Rowen (East-West Center), Prijono Tjiptoherijanto (University of Indonesia), and Teresa Wright (California State University-Long Beach and East-West Center).

More Details..

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A military funeral is a specially orchestrated funeral given by a country's military for a soldier, seaman, marine or airman who died in battle, a veteran, or other prominent military figures or heads of state. A military funeral may feature guards of honor, the firing of volley shots as a salute, drumming and other military elements, with a flag draping over the coffin. On occasion, deceased soldiers have been accorded military funerals by their enemies (for example, see Manfred von Richthofen). In the United States, the United States Army Military District of Washington (MDW) is responsible for providing military funerals. "Honoring Those Who Served" is the title of the program for instituting a dignified military funeral with full honors to the nation's veterans.
